Department of Microbiology
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Microbiology deals with diagnosis and identification of bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. This is done by microscopic examination, culture and serological tests.
The department not only gives diagnostic report but also guides physician on therapeutic and preventive aspects. Liaquat National Hospital Microbiology laboratory is ISO certified (ISO- 9001:2000) since 2004.
It deals with more than 100,000 samples a year.Department has latest equipments and facilities; all tests are performed by qualified technologists and are supervised by consultants.
The unit is equipped with some latest equipment which includes automated blood culture system BacTec 9240, fully automated serology analyzer (Axsym and Vitros ECQi) Automated drug analyzer (TDx), Semi-automated urine analyzer (UriSys) All bacteriology cultures, AFB smear and fungal culture is done in safety hood. For fastidious organisms carbon dioxide incubator is also available.

The department provides 24 hours service. Positive blood cultures (and other important samples) are directly informed to doctors.
It provides facility for urgent reporting of stat samples like CSF, other microscopy, β HCG, drug levels etc. and some other tests as per request of physician.
Quality Assurance:
The laboratory trusts in quality of service provided to customers; it is registered in *EQAS program as well as **CAP and our result is 85-100 % accurate.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The laboratory has qualified faculty, and is also recognized by College of physician and Surgeon for 4 years FCPS training program. Post graduate residents are receiving training in Microbiology for FCPS.
The faculty is involved in academic activities and research work.
Departmental Faculty is also involved in teaching pathology to medical students of Liaquat National Medical College, Nursing College, School of Diagnostic Lab Services.
Regular journal clubs and teaching session are arranged for post graduate trainees.
Infection Prevention and control
The faculty is qualified in Infection Control; they are active members of Infection Control Committee of Hospital. They are involved in policy making and implementing regarding INFECTION prevention in hospital.
