Department of Cardiology
INTRODUCTION

The Department of Cardiology Liaquat National Hospital caters to the needs of patients suffering from heart diseases. It consists of following units and services.

SERVICES

Out Patient Department 
The OPD offers services to cardiac patients daily. A team of paramedical, nursing staff resident medical officers and consultants is present to care of patients with heart diseases. Full spectrum of cardiac diseases addressed and managed here according to international guidelines.

Chest Pain Unit (Emergency room unit)
The emergency room has a separate bay (chest pain unit). A highly motivated and skilled paramedical, nursing staff and doctors, particularly trained to deal with any cardiac emergency are present round the clock to manage the patient having heart diseases, myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure and arrhythmia (rhythm disturbance) can pose a threat to patient’s life. A timely and proper diagnoses and management can save patient’s life and limit the damage. The Liaquat National Hospital emergency room is comparable with any center in the world to provide optimal and latest diagnostic and therapeutic management.

Non-invasive Diagnostic Labs  
The non-invasive diagnostic lab consists of Trans Thoracic Echocardiography (TTE), Stress Echocardiography, Trans Esophageal Echocardiography (TEE), Exercise Tolerance Test Lab, Ambulatory ECG (Holter) Monitoring, and Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring.
The non-invasive labs are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to produce reliable and accurate diagnostics of various functional and structural abnormalities of the heart. In addition, diagnosis of exercise related ischemia and abnormality of cardiac rhythm and blood pressure are easily diagnosed in the non invasive lab.

Coronary Care Unit 
The concept of CCU in sixties has changed the management of heart attack favorably. During the course of heart attack the monitoring and close observation to pickup and treat rhythm disturbances promptly can prevent the complication and sudden death. A CCU is equipped with updated equipments. Trained and skilled staff ready to diagnostic and treat any cardiac emergency are present round the clock. All the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are available at beside. Quick responding lab and radiology services are available at beside, whenever needed.  

Cardiac Cath Lab (Angiography laboratory)
This Lab was established in 1990 and was the first digital Cath Lab in Pakistan. The present machine is among the most modern available today and one of the busiest in the country, having well trained staff and skilled operators. The catheterization laboratory’s safety record is comparable with the best centers in the world.

Coronary Angiography 
This is a very important diagnostic procedure to accurately quantify the nature and extent of coronary artery disease and helps in selecting for medical treatment, PCI or Bypass Surgery. The coronary angiography, right and left heart catheterization are being preformed by skilled and qualified physicians on regular basis.  

Coronary Angioplasty  
This and other therapeutic interventions are performed on regular basis. Coronary artery angioplasty using balloon technique, rotational atherectomy and stent are being performed with professionalism and safety. The primary or rescue angioplasty (emergency angioplasty) is available, whenever needed.  

Electrophysiology
The Liaquat National Hospital Cardiology Department is among the pioneers to offer permanent pacemaker implantation. Latest and modern pacemakers are being implanted on a routine basis. An electrophysiology laboratory is being planned and shall be functional in near future.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
The department of Physiotherapy, in collaboration with the department of Cardiology & Cardiothoracic surgery, launched the Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit in LNH.
Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program to help heart patients recover quickly and improve their overall physical, mental and social functioning. The goal is to stabilize, slow or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease, another cardiac event or death. Rehab programs include exercise, training, education on heart healthy living, and counseling to reduce stress and help in returning to an active life.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Besides providing excellent services to heart patients, the Department is actively involved in training the young doctors interested in cardiology. Department is fully recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeon of Pakistan (CPSP) for FCPS training in Cardiology.
