Department of Chest Medicine
INTRODUCTION
The department of pulmonary medicine at Liaquat National Hospital established 30 years ago has long served the patients from all over Pakistan. As a pioneer unit established in the private sector in the city of Karachi, it provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with illness that affect the lungs and breathing.
Physicians provide care for a range of common and rare respiratory conditions including Pulmonary and extra pulmonary tuberculosis, Lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, chronic obstructive lung diseases, Asthma, Interstitial lung disease, pulmonary vascular disease including pulmonary hypertension, sleep disorders, acute and chronic respiratory failure and various lung infections.
SERVICES
The Out patient Clinic
The Out patient department (OPD) is located on the ground floor of Syed Wajid Ali complex.
The Morning OPD runs 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday) from 9am to 1pm, attending to almost 1400 patients a month on an average on a low charge first come first basis.
Afternoon clinics are run on daily basis from 2- 4:30 pm.
Chest Ward
In patient unit comprises 24 beds fully equipped 5 bedded ICU, 5 bedded HDU including 10 beds and 4 isolation beds with 3 mechanical ventilators and backup of arterial blood gases analyzer. A joint team of Pulmonologist and Intensivists look after the cases admitted in this unit. Bed side diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including FOB, Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL), central line placemeny and beside U/S, ECHO are performed regularly.
Non-invasive ventilators (BiPAP) facilities are also available.

Department of pulmonary Medicine works in close association with Department of thoracic surgery and procedure like Mediastinotomy, Mini thoracotomy and Thoracotomy for open lung biopsy are routinely performed.
