Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology & Metabolism
INTRODUCTION
The Endocrine System consists of a collection of glands that control basic body functions such as metabolism of sugars, fats and proteins. It also involves regulation of calcium, growth and sexual development, because these are controlled by secretion of different chemicals into the blood. These substances are called hormones. The amount of hormone produced by each gland is carefully controlled. Too much or too little of certain hormone can have effects throughout the body and cause various disorders. The endocrine system consists of following glands.
Pituitary gland
Situated at the base of the brain and it secretes
Growth hormone
Antidiuretic hormone
Prolactin
Oxytocin
Stimulating hormones for gonads (FSH and LH)
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
Pancreas
Present near the stomach and it secretes
Insulin
Glucagon
Adrenal glands
One on each side, present on top of each kidney, has two independent parts. These glands secrete
Cortisone
Androgens
Aldosterone
Adrenaline
Noradrenalin
Thyroid gland
Found in the front of the neck, and secretes
Thyroxin
Calcitonin
Parathyroid gland
Four glands, close to the thyroid gland and they secrete
Parathyroid hormone
Gonads
Two in each body
(Male and female reproductive organs); they secrete
Testosterone in males
Estrogen/progesterone in females
