Department of Gastroenterology
INTRODUCTION
Liaquat National Hospital has been a pioneer in Gastroenterology (GI) having inaugurated an independent department of Gastroenterology in August 1987. The past two decades have witnessed its growth from a humble start to one of the leading high profile departments of the hospital with a record outpatient attendance and one of the best Endoscopy services in the city.
The GI clinic is one of the busiest outpatient clinics in the hospital with an average attendance of about 70-80 patients daily. To meet the growing demands of the patients, there are daily parallel consultants OPDs in the morning and daily consultant afternoon clinics. The unit is presently located in the Wajid Ali Shah Complex, where the indoor facilities include a 25 bedded ward and Endoscopy suite.
The Endoscopy unit has three Endoscopy rooms equipped with state of the art video-endoscopes. Liaquat National Hospital has one of the busiest Endoscopy units in the country, where about 400 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are done every month.
SERVICES
The outpatient service is operational six days a week and it is a matter of great pride that referrals come not only from all over Karachi but the entire county. We have one of the largest services of cases of chronic hepatitis “B” and “C” being followed up on interferon treatment. Immunization for hepatitis “B” is available.
Endoscopy service has the distinct honour of having the state-of-the-art equipment and video endoscopes. The routine and emergency, diagnostic and therapeutic Endoscopic services available include: Upper GI endoscopy, Variceal Sclerotherapy and banding, endoclipping, foreign body removal, oesophageal dilatation and stenting, percutaneous Endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), colonoscopy and polypectomy, ERCP with sphincterotomies and stone extraction and biliary stenting, scrupulous attention is paid to sterilization of endoscopes and equipment.
A 25 bedded dedicated gastroenterology ward has made the care of routine and emergency gastrointestinal admissions prompt and focused.
The department was granted full accreditation by CPSP for FCPS in Gastroenterology in August 2001 and three of our trainees are currently working as GI consultants in different units in the country.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The Gastroenterology department is actively involved in training postgraduate students and updating General Practitioners and Physicians on current gastroenterology concepts as part of the continuous medical education (CME) program. Our department is recognized for GI training by the CPSP and we currently have eight Residents, two Registrars and one Senior Registrar.
