Department of General Medicine
INTRODUCTION
Liaquat National Hospital came into existence in 1958. It was intended to be a service hospital for the lower income class population of Karachi. General internal medicine consisted of 50 beds and an outpatient manned by three full time internists and a small number of house doctors who provided service. Teaching of house officers was limited to bedside discussions and a weekly class. As the infrastructure developed and the bed strength of the hospital increased, more internists joined the faculty. A Program Director was appointed, and postgraduate training took on a more serious note. In 2003 all medical and surgical disciplines, gynecology/obstetrics and pediatrics total up to bed strength of 700. Nearly 1000 patients are seen daily in the outpatient department. Clinical disciplines are supported by excellent departments of radiology, pathology and microbiology.
SERVICES
Currently, subspecialties allied with the department of internal medicine are; cardiology, clinical hematology/oncology, pulmonology, nephrology, infectious diseases, neurology, dermatology, rheumatology and gastroenterology.
The Department comprises of qualified and experienced Consultants and Senior Registrars. The general pool of medical beds includes a 7-bedded Intensive Care Unit and 5 bedded High Dependency Unit, with has facilities for invasive and non-invasive monitoring and protocols for patients with acute medical emergencies. Medical outpatient clinics are housed in the outpatient department where 75-100 patients are seen and examined per 3-hour session.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The department provides general medical training to Postgraduate Medical Residents who are selected to complete requirements for FCPS Part II.
The administrative office of the department liaises with the hospital’s Education Cell for organizing public seminars and CME programs. The office maintains a folder on each trainee’s bio-data and performance during training.
