Department of Oncology
INTRODUCTION
Cancer is not a single disease, but is a spectrum of neoplastic diseases originating from any organ or system of the body and is the second largest disease entity after cardiac diseases. Being a tertiary care hospital LNH has a well developed oncology department in which patients not only from interior Sindh, Baluchistan, and Northern Areas gets quality care but also from Iran, Afghanistan and Middle East are dealt with.
SERVICES
Out patient department:
Recently Oncology OPD was shifted to new Wajid All Shah Complex where patients can enjoy detailed consultation in privacy. In Oncology OPD both National and International patients are catered. Sessions are are arranged for patients who are about to start their treatment to go over the details chemotherapy and its expected side effects and how to cope with them. Financial counseling is also done at the beginning of treatment. A whole spectrum of oncology cases are coffered ranging from common malignancies like breast, lung and lymphoma to Is common lil7e thyroid.
Oncology Day Care Unit:
There is a day care facility for our patients to receive chemotherapy, blood transfusion and other supportive care in peaceful relaxing environment. Qualified and well informed doctors are available at day care during week days to closely monitor the patients receiving chemotherapy and ensure appropriate intervention if needed for patients who develop treatment related side effects and at night patients can be seen in emergency. A team of expert nurses with long standing experience in chemo handling are also present to care for cancer patients.
Chemotherapy counseling clinic and helping service:
Besides Oncology OPD there is a Counseling Clinic for chemotherapy patients where doctor and patients with their family work together to resolve both medical and non-medical issues that a patient and his/her family encounter at the time of diagnosis and during treatment. A well trained doctor is available for helpline service that offers their expertise at no charges. Calls are answered from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
In patient services:
LNH provide a separate medical ward for oncology patients ranging from patients admitted for chemotherapy administration to patients with cancer related complications to terminally ill patients.
Oncology Pharmacy:
There is separate Oncology Pharmacy in LNH. Oncology pharmacists are a critical element of patient treatment and quality control. These expertise and commitment to patient safety helps to ensure that we provide the optimal care for each patient.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The department is also involved in the training of postgraduates. The medicine residents, interns and medical students do rotations in oncology as part of their training program. During their rotation they attend OPDs, ward rounds, and have tutorials about common oncology issues and their management. Being a rapidly expanding field with new discoveries all the time, it is very important for an oncologist to remain up to date on latest treatment modifications. At LNH regular CME activities are arranged to educate young doctors about the new changes and changing paradigm in cancer treatment.
Weekly Tumor Board Meeting:
Department also supervises weekly tumor board meetings in which a team of highly qualified and experienced doctors discuss rare and complicated cases in detail for best possible treatment plan. At LNH regular specialty tumor boards including Breast and Gynecology are also held to ensure multidisciplinary care of these patients.
Research Activities:
Department is also involved in vetro and prospective studies.
