Department of Medical Education
INTRODUCTION

The Department of Medical Education has recently been started in LNH & MC in May 2010. The first step is the induction of a Professor and Head of the Department. More important still is the tacit acceptance that a DME is a need of the day for an academic institution.

THE NEED FOR A DME

The need for such a department had long been felt. The need arises from the increased accountability that is now applicable to methods of teaching, the information being imparted, and skills being taught to medical students and doctors. The public and the PM&DC are more than ever aware that what a medical education should culminate in is the making of a caring and careful doctor. All educational institutions need to ensure that attitudes, bioethics and humanitarian concern for patients are included in the curriculum. Knowledge and skills cannot be ignored.

Teaching skills do not necessarily develop pari passu with clinical skills. The question arises are all doctors equipped by temperament and training to be teachers of attitudes, skills and humanitarian concerns? Are they able to impart their own knowledge and skills to others in the best possible method? Teaching skills are acquired or learned skills which are currently not taught in medical colleges.

There is a need for faculty development, continued medical education, development of communication skills and professional development in all fields of medical education.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

The DME helps to develop teaching skills and teaching methodology and assessment methodology through an embedded program which run by holding monthly seminars and interactive sessions as well as 2 day workshops on relevant topics. Experts in the field of medical education, both inside and outside the country are invited for talks and interactive activities with our own Faculty.

Professional Education Development is a priority area. The DME also facilitates the faculty to hone their skills in different teaching and assessment methodologies. Hopefully the DME aids medical teachers to develop and enhance their careers. The DME also helps in the development and maintenance of a question bank for multiple choice, short answer questions and short essay questions. Other areas of concern are the development of Problem Based Learning and the introduction of integrated teaching and assessment.

The DME also concentrates on communication skills specially on interviewing skills for history taking, informed consent for treatment as well as procedures with the development of counseling skills in difficult situations.

There is a 3 pronged development program separately covering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and continued medical education.

THE FUTURE

The objective of all these activities is to ensure that LNH&MC becomes and remains a premier educational institution.
The DME will eventually work towards recognition of the department by the PM&DC. The goal will be to develop the DME into a department that can run degree courses in medical education and will be recognized by Karachi University.

The DME will also strive for affiliation with international bodies such as FAIMER, AMEE and IAMSE.
