INTRODUCTION
The Department of General Surgery at Liaquat National Hospital has a tradition of excellence with a distinguished record of services to the community over five decades. Since its inception the guiding principles have been to provide highest quality of care to the ailing. We perform more that 4000 surgical procedures every year. With highly qualified consultant surgeons, post- fellowship registrars, resident doctors and interns supported by round the clock cover of experienced and skilled nursing staff; we are a vigorous workforce ensuring the delivery of comprehensive surgical care.

These services are amply supported by advanced radiology, comprehensive laboratory diagnostic and endoscopy services. This infrastructure ensures our ability to serve as a referral center for patients with complicated and complex surgical problems from all over the country and the region.
We have a modern, purpose-built in-patient ward, out-patient clinics and high-tech operating rooms with a soothing ambience. There is an associated ultra-modern and resourceful High Dependency unit to ensure care of seriously ill patients, all under one roof.
DAY CARE SURGERY The Day Care Unit handles approximately one third of the total operative workload of the Hospital. The facility provides efficient and highly skilled surgical care.
The pre-admission assessment clinic is staffed by experienced anesthetists who evaluate the patient’s suitability for day care surgery. Patients are discharged after surgery on the same day as their admission, with guidance for care and convalescence at home.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
Department’s foremost investment for the future has always been its Post graduate surgical residency training program. Alumni from LNH are playing a leading role in delivery of surgical care not only across the country but also internationally. Based on holistic approach the program is aimed at inculcating meticulous clinical acumen, proficient operative skills and principled character values in the trainee. There is a growing focus on promoting research skills as well. Personal commitment of all faculties has ensured that high caliber surgeons pass out successfully qualifying in the FCPS, FRCS/MRCS examination through the years. Department of General Surgery regularly organizes symposia, workshops and CME meetings to promote understanding of surgical pathology, advanced surgical skills and developing consensus based practice guidelines. The Department has a growing focus on Clinical Research activities. Recently an electronic database and audit system has been incorporated to assist in this regard. Breast unit already maintains a detailed database and has cancer registry of over 5000 patients. The department participates in multiple Research trials in addition to indigenous research projects.
