Department of Spinal & Neurosurgery
INTRODUCTION

Department of neurosurgery is a center of excellence for the surgical and non-surgical evaluation and treatment of the full range of adult nervous system diseases, including those affecting the brain, its blood vessels and covering, the spine and spinal cord and the peripheral nerves, the Neurosurgery Department strives to provide patient care in a personalized, compassionate and accommodating manner and has the distinction of being the busiest and technologically most advanced neurosurgical unit of the country. It is a major referral center for complicated neurosurgical cases from all over the country.
Backed by a team of experienced neuroradiologists, intensivists, and neurophysicians, the department deals with a wide spectrum of neurosurgical pathology. The highly advanced imaging facilities at Liaquat National hospital allow for a very successful outcome of surgery. Sophisticated operating microscopes assist in making delicate surgeries more precise.
Over 1200 major neurosurgical procedures are performed every year. After operations, Patients are managed in the surgical ICU and in the neurosurgical high dependency unit.

SERVICES

The Department provides comprehensive emergency services for all cranio-spinal tumours, hemorrhage and vascular abnormalities including aneurysms and AVMs.We also cater to all types of spinal surgery i.e,spinal disorders such as spinal cord injuries and the removal of obstructions, degenerative disease including cervical or lumbar disc prolapse, tumors and infections. The faculty comprises of two full time and two part time neurosurgeons.

Neurosurgery Department at LNH was the first in Pakistan to acquire the IMAGE GUIDED SYSTEM (Stealth station) for precision in cranial surgery which provides accuracy and minimize side effects. Over 250 delicate brain tumor surgeries have been performed by our experts in last 4 years using this sophisticated computer and high speed ultrasonic aspirator.

Computer guided spinal surgeries are being performed for instrumentation and pedicle screw fixation. We have 2 high-speed drills for spinal and cranial work and two operating microscopes. Advanced Minimally invasive surgery with cameras and endoscopes is being performed and over 100 cases were being performed in the last 36 months. A CT-guided Stereotactic System to increase accuracy and biopsy of small lesions is already in use. Our endeavor is to add another image/laser guidance microscope and- state-of –the-art cranial retractor system in the near future to further improve our standards.

We performed various procedures for the first time in Pakistan. These include artificial disc replacement in spine vertebroplasty, insertion of intrathecal pump in spine for spasticity, Titanium cages, screws and plates,C!/2 Titanium screw fixation ,endoscopic transphenoidal pituitary and image guided brain tumor and spine surgery.
