Department of Urology
INTRODUCTION
Department of Urology at National Hospital is one of the major tertiary referral unit in Karachi. Patients are not only referred from whole province of Sindh but all over the Pakistan. Department caters to all aspects of Urology including endo-urology, uro-oncology, pediatric urology, andrology, neuro-urology, uro-gynecology and recently started transplantation services.
SERVICES
Out-patient department:
It is situated in old OPD block. Clinics are conducted six days a week where patients are seen on first come first serve basis. Afternoon and evening clinics have also been started to take care of people having busy schedule in morning hours. It is estimated that more than 10 thousands patients are seen every year. Records are maintained of all the patients attending clinics and are kept in OPD.
In-patients services:
15-bedded urology ward is staffed by personnel trained in looking after patients in this particular sub-specialty. Staff including registered nurses, residents takes care of the patients round the clock. Ward has semi-private beds and private rooms while patients are also admitted in special and executive wards on their own choice or entitlement.
Urology services:
Department is equipped with modern technology and skills. Most endoscopic procedures are carried out on video monitor in newly built world class operation theatre complex with high quality supportive facilities. Department has also started laparoscopic urology services in selected cases. Day care urological procedures are carried out using flexible fiber optic and rigid endoscopes. Ureteroscopies are done routinely for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. There is a well established state of the art facility in the department used in the evaluation of patients with BPH, neurogenic bladder and stress incontinence.
Department of urology also offers services of Lithotripsy for stone disease at economical rates. Lithotripsy machine is highly advanced state-of art ultrasound guided Dornier Compact Alpha imported from Germany has efficacy to break the stones of any consistency in shortest possible time. Lithotripter is operated by one of the most experienced doctor of under guidance of Urology faculty. Since machine is installed, favorable stone clearance rate has been achieved at the standard comparable to any prestigious institute of world.
SUPPORT SERVICES
Department provides excellent training facilities for post-graduate trainees. Regular teaching sessions in out-patient clinics, symposia, workshops and skill labs beside teaching rounds and exposure to large variety of urological problems form the bulk of training activities. Department is recognized by college of physicians and surgeons for postgraduate training in urology leading to FCPS.
