Our school of diagnostic laboratory sciences [SDLS], established in 1991, offers
two technical training programs, BS Medical Technology in Clinical Laboratory Sciences
[BS- MT-CLS] and postgraduate Diploma in Diagnostic Laboratory Sciences [PGDDLS],
affiliated with University of Karachi. BS is a four years (8 Semesters), program elaborated into practical and theory
course work. PGDDLS program has been operational since 1991 and around 150 technologists
have been passed out. BSc program which was initiated in 2003 completed the training
of 40 trainees and produced skilled technologists.
BSc
MT
was upgraded to BS in 2006 by
University of Karachi
and currently enroll 36 trainees. Both BS-MT and PGDDLS programs comprise various
basic, applicable and advanced course-work of practical as well as theoretical aspects
of Quality assurances, Hematology and Blood bank, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry,
Endocrinology, Tumor marker biology, Immunology, Histopathology, Cytology, Histochemistry,
Immuno-chemistry, Microbiology, Serology, Parasitology, Biology of Diseases and
Laboratory Management. Both training programs are facilitated by equal participation
of faculty of all four units of Pathology department.

Laboratory Technologists are professionals who perform Laboratory tests on blood,
body fluids, tissues and other substances. The results of these tests are used by
Physicians and Clinicians to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, disease
prevention, drug monitoring, tissue and organ transplant and more. Nearly 300,000
practitioners of clinical laboratory science are working in the United States
alone. Since the development of this career profession in the 1920s worldwide,
clinical laboratory science professionals have played a vital role in the diagnosis
and prevention of disease. In
Pakistan, medical technology program gained momentum in early 1970 followed by established
degree/diploma programs in Medical Laboratory Technology /Diagnostic laboratory
sciences, affiliated with University, at Liaquat National School of Diagnostic lab
Sciences.

1991-2009
-
Our Postgraduate Diploma program in Diagnostic Laboratory Sciences [PGDDLS], offered
since 1991 exclusively by LNH is an exceptional program, one of its kind in entire
Pakistan and affiliated with University of Karachi.
-
In 2002, our B.Sc in Medical Technology [B.Sc-MT] program, of two years duration, also got approved from University of Karachi.
The BS program was upgraded to four year BS MT CLS in 2006 by university of Karachi.
-
Our faculty includes highly skilled
and exceptionally qualified professionals, experienced in providing structured,
organized, advanced and applicable course-work, both in theory and practical aspects.
-
The PGDDLS and BS-MT exclusive program
is similar in course structure and periodic organization of subjects with several
graduate and postgraduate degree and diploma programs offered by Universities and
Medical Centers in USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain, Japan. Similarly, the
B.Sc-MT program also has several common features with those programs offered in
Americas
and European countries.
-
Since 1991, upto 2008, nearly 220 trainees have successfully completed PGDDLS and
B.Sc Mt program, and 36 are now currently enrolled in various stages of completion
of BS MT-CLS program .
-
Due to high caliber of training skills provided to trainee-technologist of PGDDLS
and B.Sc/BS MT programs, a large number are now employed in Middle-East, Australia ,
Japan
and Canada.
-
Several technologists, after passing PGDDLS and
BSc MT, have also employed in reputable institution within the Pakistan
such as LNH, AKU,Ziauddin Medical University, Sheikh Zayed Medical Centre,Skoukat Khanum Hospital, The Lab, Karachi Lab, PIA Lab etc.
-
Several PGDDLS and B.Sc MT-technologist are also engaged in their further studies
and enrolled or passed Master programs from University of Karachi. Many also pursuing exclusive MPhil / PhD programs.
-
As per requirement for Advance studies, the students who went through their rotation
and course work in PGDDLS and BSc/BS MT are encouraged to engage in R and D projects
and presentations.
-
During last eight {2001-2009] years
around 70 research and development [R & D] projects have been completed and
presented by trainees and technologist of LN-SDLS.
-
A considerable number of PGDDLS and BSc MT
technologists are trained by LN-SDLS received appreciation and recognition from
Scientific Societies, Research Institutes and Universities through awards and certificates.
-
PGDDLS and B.Sc/BS MT program and its recipients induced healthy impact on Quality
of services in Pathology with increase in productivity and efficiency.
-
Similarly, the educational and professional sustainability of health care services
of LNH have also increased due to organization and pertinent structure of graduate
and postgraduate diploma and degree programs offered by SDLS.
-
Due to advanced and distinguished caliber of teaching and training of PGDDLS, BSc/BS
MT-technologist/trainees by qualified faculty of SDLS, data gathered upto 2008 [starting
from 1991], shows that the demand and significance of those
technologist acquiring PGDDLS/BSc/BS MT from SDLS-LNH have increased
upto 450%.
