History - Liaquat National Hospital
About Us | Tribute to Syed Wajid Ali Shah | The Governing Body | The Administration

Soon after Independence, about half a century ago, the Red Cross Fete Committee, which was chaired by Syed Wajid Ali, raised about Rs.8 lakhs through Meena Bazars organized under the guidance of Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan. At a fateful meeting chaired by Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, the Committee decided to establish a hospital in Karachi under the name "The National Hospital".

His Excellency Mr. Ghulam Muhammad, the Governor General of Pakistan, laid the foundation stone of "The National Hospital" on February 23, 1953. In memory of Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan who was assassinated in 1951, it was decided to rename "The National Hospital" as "Liaquat National Hospital".

The vision of the founding members of this Hospital was to establish a healthcare unit where people of limited means could receive comprehensive medical care at an affordable cost. To achieve this goal, they constituted a committee and Mr. Syed Wajid Ali Shah was selected as the President of this distinguished group on the 5th November, 1958. Presently his eldest son Mr. Syed Shahid Ali Shah is carrying forward the mission. Through the years, LNH has maintained its identity and followed its mission of providing affordable and high quality healthcare to all classes of society.
