LNMC has been established within the premises of LNH, Karachi. The departments of basic medical science include the departments of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology. The establishment of basic medical science departments is an important and integral component in the genesis of any medical college and hence the development of these departments plays a very important role in the success of any undergraduate medical program. All these departments at LNMC have been developed according to the guidelines provided by HEC and PM&DC. Each department is headed by a full time Professor assisted by Associate and Assistant Professors plus a good number of lectures.
The faculty members of the departments of basic medical science are well versed and experienced in latest methods of teaching which include Problem Basic Learning and Small Group Tutorials. The basic science subjects will be taught in an integrated curriculum with incorporation of the relevant clinical knowledge to facilitate the students at an early stage in understanding the clinical problems they will face in their professional careers.
The department of Anatomy has an air-conditioned dissection hall with facility for cadaver dissection. The Anatomy museum has plastic models of embryology and various regions of the body and organs, original dissected specimens and a large collection of bones to help the students understand human structure which they need to relate in order to study their function.
The histology lab is equipped with latest binocular microscopes and ample number of slides of various human tissues and organs. Latest teaching microscopes purchased for the department have a provision for students to observe slides through TV monitors.
The department of Biochemistry has its own research unit equipped with latest research tools especially for molecular biology. Beside the undergraduate teaching and training program, Biochemistry department has started the research program. One M. Pill and two Ph.D. students have been enrolled with faculty of Medicine, University of Karachi. The department of Biochemistry, with the collaboration of other faculties of LNMC, is performing research activities, which are being published in the medical journals of repute.
The department of Physiology has highly and well experienced teaching faculty focused on delivering quality education. It has well ventilated and spacious laboratory which has been equipped with latest instruments and teaching aids. The students can perform different skills necessary to understand the mechanism of different body functions as well as acquire skills for examination of patients in this laboratory.
The department of Pharmacology comprises of power laboratory, spacious museum, Skilled and technically sound laboratory staff. The laboratory has latest. State of the art instruments on which students can perform the hand on practices, which facilitates and enhance their learning of the subject. The Pharmacology laboratory is also equipped with instruments for post graduate research work which will help the students for further research.
The department of Pathology is a multidisciplinary department consisting of Histopathology, Haematology and Clinical Microbiology. The laboratories are newly built having latest equipments and well trained and vastly experienced faculty.
The department of Forensic Medicine is responsible for teaching Forensic Medicine and Toxicology including Ethics to MBBS, 3rd year students of Liaquat National Medical College. The main objective is to highlight those legal implications of medical practice which young medical graduated will be expected to face in their future career as Medical Practitioner. The department has various models, specimens, latest instruments, weapons and charts at its museum, thus imparting the required and up-to-date knowledge.
The department of Community Medicine has diversified faculty with vast experience in the fields of Public Health and Research. The department uses the tools of modern teaching methodologies such as case based teaching and small groups learning sessions, combined with environmental, behavioral and social science research to identify the risk factors for illness, patterns of disease transmission and to define environmental and occupational hazards to health and finally to develop rational and cost-effective strategies for disease for disease prevention and health promotion.
The central skills laboratory will be used to supplement the teaching of many of these skills. The college also has a centrally air-conditioned and spacious library as well as an attached learning resource centre with substantial number of books, Medical Journals and other teaching aids as computers, CD's and videos.
The central LNH library with additional text books and reference books on various specialties and more than 80 Medical Journals will also help the faculty and students in the advancement of clinical knowledge.
