Risk Factors for Breast Cancer

All women are at risk of developing breast cancer. While the exact causes remain unknown, the following factors increase the chance of developing the disease:

Age: Most diagnoses occur after the age of 40
Early onset of menstruation (before age 12) and late onset of menopause (after age 55)
Nulliparity (never giving birth) or late childbirth (after age 30)
Not breastfeeding
Personal history of breast cancer or certain non-cancerous breast conditions.
Family history of breast cancer, particularly among close relatives (parent, sibling, child) diagnosed at a young age
Genetic mutations such as BRCA1 or BRCA2
Being overweight or obese
Alcohol consumption
Lack of physical exercise
Exposure to high levels of ionizing radiation in the chest area during early life
Long term use of hormone replacement therapy

Symptoms of Breast Cancer

The most common indication of breast cancer is the presence of a new lump or mass. While most of the cancerous masses are painless, hard, and have irregular edges, they can also be tender, soft, or rounded.

Additional signs of breast cancer that need medical attention include:

Swelling of all or part of the breast (even without a noticeable lump)
Irritation or dimpling of the breast skin
Nipple retraction (inward turning)
Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
Blood stained discharge from the nipple

In some cases, breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes under the arm, causing swelling or a lump even before a tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt. Any swelling in the lymph nodes should be reported to a doctor promptly.
